Organic sulfoxides have wide applications in the synthesis of chemically useful
and biologically active molecules such as drugs, flavors, germicides as well as
catabolism regulators. The common synthetic method for sulfoxide is the oxidation of
organic sulfides. However, a stoichiometric amount of organic or inorganic oxidant is
required in those preparative processes and thus a large amount of toxic waste would
be generated.
Herein, sulfoxides was prepared using tert-butyl nitrite as oxidant, ferric nitrate
as catalyst and acetonitrile as solvent. The influence of reaction temperature, reaction
time and amount of oxidant on the oxidation of sulfides to its corresponding
sulfoxides was also studied.
Meanwhile, this environmentally benign process has a
wide substrate compatibility including aromatic and aliphatic sulfides.
